I would go LCD Flat Panel, preferably Samsung or Vizio. They are both good brands and LCD is the longest lasting with better quality. Plasma has a slight edge on quality over LCD, but can suffer image burn.

I strongly suggest that you stay away from a rear projection Sony. Hundreds of thousands of Sony owners have gotten scr*wed over those televisions, including myself. The optical block units that they use in them are prone to strange screen anomolies and Sony refuses to admit the problem, recall the televisions, or honor the warranty. Google “Sony Optical Block”..it’s all there. I just paid $450 to fix a 42 inch Wega after 14 months of ownership. The repair cost was $900. Sony agreed to pay half ONLY after I recorded fifty phone conversations with them where they told me different things and then confronted management with the recordings and threatened to sue. I was without a television for a solid month while I argued with these idiots at Sony and they passed me around and tried to get rid of me.
As I said, I just got my tv back and it cost me $450. I paid $1800 for it 14 months ago. I’ve put THREE lcd lamps in it, another $600. And the best part… I get NO warranty on the Optical Block Unit now. They didn’t tell me that until AFTER I paid for it. I was a firm believer in Sony products and my home is loaded with them. I wouldn’t buy another Sony product now if you paid me to do it. I’ve looked at the Samsung you’re talking about. If we couldn’t get my tv fixed, the Samsung you’re looking at is the one we were going to buy.
